Cupping therapy is a form of alternative medicine in which cups are placed on the skin to create suction. This suction helps to facilitate healing by increasing blood flow, reducing inflammation, and drawing out toxins from the body. It has been used for thousands of years in various cultures, including Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern traditions.

History and Origins

Cupping therapy dates back to ancient times and has been practiced in many different cultures. Historical texts and artifacts from ancient Egypt, China, and Greece document the use of cupping for various ailments. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), cupping is often used alongside acupuncture to enhance therapeutic effects.

Types of Cupping

  1. Dry Cupping - Involves placing cups on the skin to create a vacuum without using any additional substances.

  2. Wet Cupping (Hijama) - Involves small incisions on the skin before applying the cups, allowing a small amount of blood to be drawn out along with the suction.

  3. Moving Cupping - Uses flexible silicone cups that can be moved over the skin, providing a massaging effect along with suction.

  • Promotes Relaxation - The therapy has a calming effect on the nervous system, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

  • Enhances Skin Health - Cupping can improve skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and cellulite by increasing blood flow and promoting lymphatic drainage.

Notice:

Since the marks of cupping and gua sha can last 2 or 3 days or more it may be voided if you are plannning to attend a wedding, photoshoot, outdoor excrusion when showing your back.

The technique is also not used every week. After a few sessions, acupuncturists will have “emptied the cup,” so to speak – and a release of chronic symptoms will no longer occur.

After about three days, there is typically no petechiae left, and pain relief is usually instant – if not gone altogether. “Sha” only develops in the areas of the more intense pain. Our patients often observe the marks and say, “That’s exactly where it always hurts!”
